(CNN) – Ryan Gosling is grateful for his Oscar nomination, but he joined the chorus of people questioning the omission of co-star Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig from their respective individual categories.
Gosling was nominated Tuesday in the supporting actor category for his portrayal of Mattel's Ken doll in “Barbie,” last year's top-grossing film, opposite Robbie's Barbie star.
Her nomination is among the eight nods the film has received, but furor over director Gerwig and Robbie's failure to secure individual nominations in the director and lead actress categories, respectively, has continued since the announcement Nominations continue unabated. (“Barbie” was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, which, like CNN, is part of Warner Bros. Discovery).
Although Gerwig and Robbie weren't individually recognized, they each received an Oscar nomination this week. Gerwig was honored alongside her “Barbie” co-writer (and husband) Noah Baumbach in the adapted screenplay category, and Robbie was nominated for a best picture nomination along with three others as a producer.
In his statement, Gosling also recognized his co-star America Ferrera, who received a surprise supporting actress nomination for her performance in the film.
This is Gosling's full statement, provided to CNN:
“I am extremely honored to be nominated by my peers alongside such remarkable artists in a year with so many great films. And I never thought I would say this, but I also feel incredibly honored and proud that it's for the role of a plastic doll named Ken.
But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie film without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two main people responsible for this film that made history and was celebrated around the world.
Without his talent, drive and genius, no one in film would be able to be recognized.
To say I'm disappointed they weren't nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.
Against all odds, with nothing more than a pair of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, broke our hearts, advanced culture, and made history. Their work should be recognized alongside that of other deserving nominees.
Nonetheless, I am extremely happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this groundbreaking film.”
