This year, Marvel got into the festive spirit with two holiday specials. After Werewolf by Night launched in October and wowed almost everyone with its commitment to old-school horror, the Guardians of the Galaxy headline next week’s holiday special. With such a large library of characters, each of them could theoretically work with a specific holiday, which Ryan Reynolds is keen to try.

During the press round for his recently released Christmas film, Spirited, Reynolds revealed to Big Issue that he was co-writing a Christmas film for The Merc with a Mouth with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (the writing duo who wrote the first two Deadpool films). That film, which he said contained a song-and-dance number, “was lost in the confusion of Disney’s takeover of Fox and was never made.”

It’s not very surprising to hear that this was in the works as Fox notoriously had several superhero films on its agenda at the time. From a Kitty Pryde solo film to a confrontation between the Fantastic Four and X-Men, none of these films ever really materialized, despite authors or then-known actors like James Franco being associated with them. (Remember when we were told several times that Gambit was getting a movie?)

What is surprising, however, is that this has so far been kept secret; Back in 2018, the Deadpool franchise played around with Christmas by re-releasing the second film for a limited time under a PG-13 rating and the holiday title Once Upon a Deadpool. While it didn’t mean much more than shave a few minutes off the running time, it at least showed that the character could fit into PG-13 mold pretty well if he had to. Judging by the comments previously made, that won’t be the case, which is a good thing, since the film brings Hugh Jackman back to slice and dice with the talkative mercenary.

Maybe after the hits of Deadpool 3 in 2024 we’ll get Deadpool Saves Christmas or something. Be another reason to get Jackman back, if only to see him sing while wearing Wolverine’s costume. Given the likelihood of that happening, Reynolds simply said, “Maybe one day we can do this movie. It’s not a musical, but it’s a complete Deadpool Christmas movie.”
