Luke Donald has just stepped onto the first tee to greet the fans! He did a fake swing off the tee and I bet he would love to be out there with his clubs.
He named some strong pairings today, with Fleetwood and McIlroy taking on Thomas and Spieth in our opening game, and Donald says his main aim this morning is to get off to another solid start.
Donald: “Of course we’ll think about it.” But tomorrow I’m really focused on going out tomorrow morning, having another strong session and trying to win this session.
“That will be our only goal for tomorrow morning, and of course we will have a few more thoughts for Saturday afternoon and the singles, but this is a great start and we want to extend this lead.”
The Englishman looks pumped out there too! He leads the fans in a massive thunderclap, and there’s a reason for that! Europe was very impressive yesterday and looking back on Friday, Donald said it was “an amazing rollercoaster ride”.
“Yes, Ryder Cups are full of amazing rollercoasters and swings all day long. Apparently it felt much more pleasant this morning than this afternoon. We got off to a quick start this morning. We kept it; The 4-0 win was something very special. But there was a period of holing putts in the US this afternoon.
“They were flipping matches. Again, we got off to a pretty good start, but they fought back. And we knew they would. They are a strong team. There is a lot of talent on this team. But what we did until 18 just shows the determination, the courage, the perseverance, somehow the unity of our team.
“They never gave up and kept pushing until the end. And to hole putts like Viktor did, like Jon did, and of course Rosey, right at the end, that’s huge. At one point it really looked as if it was 3-1 for the USA, but it really is 5-3 – they are well in the game again. But to win this session when it looked like it would be 3-1 is an incredible achievement from my boys.”
