The United States’ efforts to end a three-decade drought in Europe hit a near-impenetrable wall on the first day as the Europeans raced to a historic 6.5-1.5 lead in two sessions at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome . Europe won the morning foursome session 4-0 and then erased three U.S. leads in the afternoon foursome, turning what might have been a 5-3 lead into a more significant 5-point lead by the end of the day.
While the Americans have won many international trophies on home soil, they have failed to win a Ryder Cup played in Europe since 1993. To do this despite such a deficit, the USA must win 65% of the remaining games to achieve victory, or 62.5% to retain the cup in the event of a draw. Given the atmosphere, the incredible play of Euro golfers like Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland and the Americans’ seeming inability to hit big shots, that will prove a difficult task.

There was a radical change in the American roster this year, as the play of some golfers this season resulted in unexpected automatic qualifiers on the team. Ultimately, the United States seemed to go deeper from top to bottom, but Europe brought the three hottest players into the tournament: Rahm, Hovland and world No. 2 Rory McIlroy. It will be up to some US stars like Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth to get the red, white and blue going after they failed to win a single game on Friday.
It remains to be seen whether the Americans can return to this Ryder Cup. To have any chance they will need to win at least two games in a row in the morning foursome and after losing the first session on Friday that seems entirely unlikely.
But no matter how it turns out, this Ryder Cup should remain exciting in the last two days. Ryder Cup crowds are notoriously rowdy, and this group in Rome was no different across two eight-game sessions.
