Previously, the AMPTP insisted its latest contract proposal was its “best and final” offer. But according to , SAG-AFTRA refused and broke off negotiations because the AMPTP insisted on enforcing new rules on the use of likenesses that would ultimately leave actors in the lurch. According to , AMPTP’s latest deal would allow studios to secure the digitally scanned likenesses of all List F cast members – members of the guild who earn more than the minimum series fee of $32,000 per episode, or more than $60,000 -Earn dollars for feature films.
The AMPTP has been trying to get SAG-AFTRA to buy into the idea of studios paying actors for their likenesses since the strike began earlier this year. However, since this latest proposal would allow studios to use digital scans of dead actors without the consent of their descendants or the guild, SAG-AFTRA opposed it, expressing a desire for changes that would require studios to screen the actors every time to pay when they see faces are used and obtain prior consent from these actors.
On Monday evening, SAG-AFTRA posted a short message to
Background actors have largely been the focus of conversation throughout the strike, as well as how studios have moved to scanning actors’ faces for post-production work. Background actors are just as important as Schedule F actors in the entire film production process and deserve the same protection. But this all comes at a time when it’s becoming increasingly clear that artists across the board have good reason to believe that their best interests are not being prioritized by studios, especially when it comes to how their faces are used to sell product be used.
