Saguenay: Another ship decommissioned due to lack of personnel

The Canadian Coast Guard ship Vincent Massey, due to join the icebreaker fleet, is currently stuck in the Grande-Anse sector in Saguenay due to a lack of personnel on board to ensure its proper operation.

“He has been in the dock since Sunday. It was another icebreaker that had to take over,” said an inside source who trusted the journal.

“CCGS Vincent Massey is currently awaiting a crew member who is expected to board on January 25th. In the meantime he could refuel. The situation is not impacting our operations or level of service at this time,” said spokesman Matthew Dillon.

On October 17, 2022, the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) announced that the Vincent Massey would be delivered once the Davie shipyard completed the conversion work. The ship will join the fleet of medium-sized icebreakers that keep eastern Canada’s waterways open during the winter.

Phoenix again

It is not the first time that a ship has been forced to stop due to a lack of personnel. In September, a CCG ship was stuck in the Arctic for 48 hours, more than 3,000 kilometers from its homeport of Quebec, and was unable to return due to a lack of personnel on board to ensure its proper operations.

“The government is underpaying and paying poorly with Phénix,” said Yvon Barrière, regional executive vice president of the Public Service Alliance of Canada.
