Sally Field reveals a boyfriend once tried to get her on a date with Steven Spielberg

Sally Fields has revealed how a friend tried to set her up with Steven Spielberg 50 years ago.

The 76-year-old actress revealed how they almost went on a date when they introduced Spielberg, 76, when he received the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s Vanguard Award for his film The Fabelmans.

“My new business manager I hired wanted me to meet one of his clients and wanted me to go to Universal’s supposed ‘meeting’ because he thought we would get along well,” the Oscar winner explained, according to People.

The couple did, but not in the way the matchmaker had hoped.

“And while we’ve never actually dated, my beloved Steven Spielberg has never left my life. For almost 50 years – is that really the case? – we have been through this life filled with good and evil, laughter and fear. He’s been my biggest supporter and always a welcoming place to be.”

The longtime friends eventually worked together on 2012’s Lincoln, which saw Sally as First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln.

Steven first asked the Places in the Heart star to take on the role in 2005, but the project didn’t materialize until years later.

When the time came, Sally almost didn’t get the part.

The veteran actress was about a decade older than Daniel Day-Lewis, 65, who took on the role of the 16th President, and the director was concerned about the age difference.

To allay any concerns, the two dressed up in costumes to do a camera test, and Sally previously told the Los Angeles Times that they “had a long impromptu for an hour or two that turned into this kind of magical reality.”

Sally recalls, “To this day none of us remember what we did or what we said.”

“But as a person and as an actor, it felt magical for both of us to be together and do these two people. And that was the beginning of the relationship that you see in the film.’

In honor of The Fabelmans, a semi-autobiographical look at the beginnings of the director’s love of filmmaking, Sally spoke about the influence her longtime boyfriend had on her life and the way films are made.

“I honestly can’t imagine my life without him at this point, but I can’t imagine our country, let alone the industry, if Steven Spielberg had never held a camera.”
