Salt Lake City has officially submitted its bid to host the 2034 Winter Olympics.
The application was approved by the SLC-UT Board of Directors on February 22nd. The city's bid to host the games came as it was named the preferred and sole candidate for the event by the International Olympic Committee.
An official bid submission ceremony was held virtually Thursday in Salt Lake City with Mayor Erin Mendenhall and Utah Gov. Spencer Cox.
“It’s official – we have just submitted our bid to host the 2034 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games to the International Olympic Committee,” Cox wrote on X.
“Thank you to everyone who has worked hard to get us to this point. “Utah is the state of sports and we look forward to bringing the Olympics back to the Beehive State!”

If approved, the city will host the games six years after the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles
Salt Lake City – Utah Committee for the Games (SLC-UT) CEO Fraser Bullock called the bid a “monumental step.”
If the city gets the green light to host it, it would be the first Winter Olympics since 2002. Additionally, the Summer Olympics would be held in Los Angeles six years after returning to the United States.
American IOC member and IOC Vice President Anita DeFrantz is confident the bid will receive the necessary votes, but warned: “It's not quite a done deal yet.”
To add to the workload, United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee Chairman Gene Sykes intervened after attending the ceremony. He said IOC officials were “not happy but excited about the partnership.” [the SLC-UT] Team.'
The English version of the main file contains two maps, 14 tables and 30,947 words. The detailed appendix now totals 343 pages and contains six maps, 18 studies and reports, 26 site plans and 52 spreadsheets.

Completed documents for Salt Lake City and the 2030 Games in the French Alps were due Thursday. Both applications were selected as preferred candidates by the IOC board in November – the remaining steps were carefully considered before receiving the stamp of approval in July.
The IOC's Future Host Commission team is scheduled to conduct site assessments in Utah from April 9-13. The board will then likely recommend applying for full membership during its quarterly meeting June 12-14.
If recommended, the SLC-UT offer can be presented to all voting IOC members in the second half of June. The final presentation and election of IOC members is expected to take place on July 24 during the Summer Olympics in Paris. The hosting contract will be signed immediately afterwards.
The SLC-UT has requested an election on July 24 to coincide with Utah's Pioneer Day celebration.
