Sam Altman revealed in the interview that it “took him a while to overcome his ego and emotions” when he first received the offer to become CEO of OpenAI again. Finally he decided to accept the proposal presented to him.

“Of course, I really loved the company and have put my entire life energy into it for the last four and a half years, but most of the time even longer. And we are making such great progress on the mission. The mission of a safe and useful AGI is very important to me,” he said in the interview.

The company’s board members, who were ousted from OpenAI on November 17, said Altman and top management had disagreements over his views on AI safety and said the CEO had not been “completely open” with the board.

When asked why he was fired from OpenAI last month, Sam Altman chose not to reveal internal details of the decision. He also said he “welcomes” the independent investigation into his firing led by OpenAI’s Bret Taylor.

Altman spoke about accepting the position again, telling The Verge: “It was really interesting. On Saturday morning, some board members called me and asked if I would be willing to talk about it. And my immediate reaction was something like…” Defiance. It was like, “Man, I’m hurt and angry and I think this sucks.”

Sam Altman was fired as CEO of OpenAI on November 17, the ChatGPT maker announced in a blog post. Greg Brockman and three other company executives resigned in solidarity, leading to a scuffle on the board.

Days later, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that Altman would be hired to lead an AI research program at the company. However, OpenAI employees threatened to resign if Altman was reinstated at the helm.

While many directors were reluctant to make a comeback, Sam Altman was again offered the CEO position at OpenAI, with Bret Taylor, Larry Summers and Adam D’Angelo as new board members.
