Samsung Display has done its show. The star is the Rollable Flex, an expandable OLED display that stretches from 49mm to 254.4mm and is ideal for tablets and laptops.

I interrupt you here: don’t confuse Samsung Electronics with Samsung Display. If the two companies are part of the same group, Samsung Display is a display vendor… for businesses. Display Week is actually a Samsung display meetup, where the screen specialist each time presents its most daring innovations in the big circus of display technologies.
An OLED screen that you can literally fold
And this year, it’s safe to say the show lived up to expectations with the Rollable Flex, an OLED display that can be expanded from 49mm to 254.4mm. Yes, you read that right: a screen that you can stretch like a rubber band, or almost.

Samsung hasn’t talked much about the diagonal of this screen. But according to our scientific calculations, it should be somewhere between 12 and 13 inches. An ideal format for tablets or laptops, according to Samsung, which already seems to be revolutionizing the market with its Magic Screen. But now it would be too easy if Samsung gave us all the details right the first time. The screen wraps around an axis, but it’s unknown if the mechanism is motorized. Does it have to be unrolled by hand like old parchment? In any case, it’s reminiscent of LG’s rollable OLED TV.

Other marvels from the Korean house also include an OLED screen that can recognize fingerprints anywhere on the screen. As a reminder, current fingerprint sensors only work in a specific spot on the screen. And that’s not all: this screen of the future can also measure the user’s heart rate and blood pressure. Just place two fingers on the screen and you’re done! We can already imagine the potential health applications. Another highlight was the demonstration of a display with an impressive refresh rate of 240 Hz.

Last but not least, Samsung also presented a foldable smartphone whose screen can be folded 360 degrees like a paper doll. But when can we get our hands on these gems of technology? Samsung is silent as a carp. Patience is the mother of all virtues, we are told. Now a brand needs to buy these technologies from Samsung Display and incorporate them into a marketed product.
