The Samsung Display company produces screens for the vast majority of smartphones of various brands. It just announced the upcoming availability of a new OLED screen called Sensor OLED, which can detect fingerprints anywhere on the surface and measure the user’s heart rate. These panels will be integrated into the next high-end cell phones. It remains to be seen which.
Today there are mainly two providers of OLED screens for the smartphone industry: Samsung Display and BOE. The Samsung Display company supplies screens for Samsung cell phones in particular, but also for many other brands. On the occasion of the SID Display Week 2023, which is currently taking place in Los Angeles in the USA, the company is presenting the world’s first OLED screen with a fingerprint biosensor that can also measure blood pressure. Usually fingerprint sensors are installed as a separate element under the OLED panel of smartphones. But the, Samsung Display has managed to integrate the organic light-sensitive photodiode into the panel itself. In addition, this solution works on the entire screen surface. Thus, it is possible to measure the user’s heart rate, blood pressure and stress level with a simple two-finger touch on the screen.
How does it work?
The technology is based on it The OLED light emitted during a check is reflected differently depending on the contraction and relaxation of the blood vessels inside the finger and when it returns to the panel. The organic light-detecting photodiode (OPD) detects it and converts it into usable health data. Currently, Vivo and Xiaomi are offering screen-level modules capable of fingerprint recognition for their respective X90 Pro, Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro models. but also to measure heart rate, but not using Samsung Display’s integration technology offered here. This last also enables multiple finger recognition to get more accurate results and in particular to measure blood pressure (requiring two measurements, one for each arm).
For now, it’s up to Samsung Display to demonstrate its know-how in the field of smartphone screens. This new panel could be available soon for manufacturers who want to use it in their devices. There is a good chance that the next level smartphones will be equipped with it with, perhaps at the forefront, the future series of Samsung Galaxy S24 phones, whose presentation is expected early next year.
