Samsung Galaxy Rugged technology ensures sustainability in hospitality – Samsung

De Mello Coffee Roasters tested the Samsung Rugged line to see how it performed when cooking and roasting.

The Samsung Galaxy Rugged range, including the Galaxy Tab Active4 Pro and Galaxy XCover6 Pro, is designed for use in demanding work environments. Thanks for a review[1] IP68 and durability[2] These devices are military grade and can withstand water, dust, drops and shock. They represent ideal technology solutions for industries such as construction, transportation, manufacturing and more. But can they keep up with the hustle and bustle of the service industry?

Who better than De Mello Coffee Roasters, an award-winning specialty coffee roaster based in Toronto, to test Galaxy Rugged units? Founded in 2013, De Mello Coffee supplies high-quality coffee and baked goods to many coffee shops in Toronto and operates four of its own coffee shops in the Greater Toronto Area.

After testing the equipment in their roasting department, warehouse and kitchen, De Mello Coffee team members Jaimee, Head Roaster, and Neo, Warehouse Manager, shared their feedback on the performance of the Galaxy XCover6 Pro and Galaxy Tab Active4 Pro in a recovery environment .

Tell us about the work environment where you used Galaxy Rugged devices.

“Our work environment exposes our equipment to factors such as excessive heat, ground coffee beans and flour in the kitchen, cold temperatures and staff often on their feet and moving around. Durability plays an important role for us and for Rugged devices, which have proven themselves particularly well in the following scenarios:

  • Roast meat: During daily coffee roasting, the roasting machine reaches temperatures of up to 240 degrees Celsius, while the afterburner can reach temperatures of up to 999 degrees Celsius. Despite the intense heat nearby, the devices worked perfectly. Additionally, the machines used to seal the coffee bags generate considerable heat, but setting the machines up on them was not a problem.
  • Camp :In the warehouse where green coffee beans are stored in linen bags, the environment is rather dusty due to coffee and flour particles. Workers often have to climb ladders to reach items stored on high shelves. Despite the risk of accidental drops and dust accumulation, the devices were not affected.
  • Kitchen : In the kitchen there is not only heat, you also have to cool the dough and the ingredients. The devices also demonstrated their resistance to cold. One time, an employee accidentally left his device in the refrigerator overnight. Surprisingly, the battery, screen and overall durability were not compromised. »

How did the devices support your daily operations?

“At the roastery, we frequently used the Galaxy XCover6 Pro and Galaxy Tab Active4 Pro to complete tasks such as recording coffee profiles, archiving data, and taking notes during meetings. We also used the Galaxy Tab Active4 Pro for inventory control, Word document creation, and all warehouse communication needs. In the kitchen, the devices were used to check order forms, place and accept orders, and communicate with customers and wholesale partners. »

What features of the Galaxy Rugged series caught your attention the most?

“Durability was the most outstanding feature for us. Additionally, the touchscreen was very convenient even when wearing nitrile gloves, which we wear regularly.[3] The device's pen performance was exceptional, making it feel like writing on paper. In addition, the longer battery life was a significant advantage. Despite the eight-hour shifts, the devices lasted two days without any problems. »

How did the Galaxy Rugged devices perform in terms of productivity?

“The devices have promoted seamless communication in a variety of work environments and have proven invaluable in completing tasks such as note-taking and accounting. They have significantly improved our ability to access necessary information and maintain productivity, regardless of context. »

[1] IP68 rating: Waterproof to a depth of 1.5 m (5 feet) fresh water for up to 30 minutes and resistant to dust, dirt and sand. After wetting the device, rinse and dry the residue. Use on the beach or swimming pool is not recommended.
[2] These devices meet military specifications (MIL-STD-810H) for a subset of 21 specific environmental conditions, including temperature, dust, shock and vibration, and low pressure and high altitude. Real-world usage differs from the specific environmental conditions of the MIL-STD-810G certification tests. Samsung does not guarantee device performance under all extreme conditions.
[3] Glove mode is compatible with most gloves and in wet conditions, but does not work as expected with very thick mittens or gloves. Tactile sensitivity increases responsiveness in leather gloves with a thickness of 2mm or less based on internal laboratory test results. Underwater touch is not available. Touch sensitivity may vary depending on the material and thickness of the glove and other environmental conditions. To use it, touch sensitivity mode must be enabled in Settings > Advanced features > Touch sensitivity.
