Samuel Montembeault and Justin Barron with Canada at the World Cup

Montreal Canadiens players Samuel Montembeault and Justin Barron are part of Canada’s roster set to take part in the Men’s Ice Hockey World Championship.

Head coach André Tourigny relied on several Quebecers, five in total. In addition to the CH goalkeeper, Samuel Blais, Joe Veleno, Pierre-Olivier Joseph and Devon Levi will travel to Finland and Latvia for this tournament.

The Maple Leaf will approach this World Cup with a mixture of experience and youth. Forward Tyler Toffoli and defenseman Tyler Myers are the only ones to have attended the event before. Levi, the young Buffalo Sabers goaltender, meanwhile, was at the Beijing Olympics with Arizona Coyotes’ Jack McBain.

“We are pleased to announce the first 20 players selected to represent Canada at the 2023 IIHF World Championship,” Armstrong said in a statement. We know these players will proudly represent our country in Tampere and Riga and we look forward to fighting for the gold medal this month.”

An opportunity

Montembeault had announced during the Habs report that he had been asked to represent Canada, something he hadn’t done since the 2016 World Juniors, but he hadn’t been deployed at the time. This season with CH, the Bécancourer native posted a 16-19-3 record, a 0.901 save and a 3.42 clean sheet average.

Barron, on the other hand, started the campaign with the Laval Rocket before heading to Montreal. The 21-year-old defenseman was one of the Canadians’ best players on the blue line in the second half of the season, finishing the season with 15 points and a -2 difference in 39 games.

This tournament is also a great opportunity to see top pro Adam Fantilli in action about a month before the National Hockey League draft.

Keep in mind that other players could join the adventure along the way, including some currently playing in the Bettman Circuit Playoffs.

Canada will open the competition on May 12 with a clash with the Latvians at the Riga Arena. He will also cross swords with Hungary in a preparatory duel in Budapest on Tuesday.
