Sanchez promises Michel that Spain will live up to it

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez this Sunday promised European Council President Charles Michel that “Spanish institutions and citizens will rise to this challenge” during his rotating presidency of the Union, which began last Saturday and will last until December 31 , despite the uncertainty about the results of the snap general elections that will be held on the 23rd.

Sánchez received Michel at the Moncloa Palace, marking the first effective act of the Spanish Presidency, after the symbolic premiere on Saturday with Sánchez’s trip to Kiev to demonstrate the Union’s support for the Ukrainian people and on the eve of the European College of Commissioners are coming to Madrid this Monday, led by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This meeting was scheduled for late next week but was brought forward to avoid coinciding with the start of the election campaign.

In a brief, no-questions-asked appearance, Sánchez assured that he would assume the presidency “with gratitude and humility,” but also with a desire to make this semester “a time of great strides” for the Union, “that will take important decisions for the Union “The future of Europe and I would say of the world,” even if he admits that it will be shaped by the war in Ukraine, which he will spare no effort to support.

After reaffirming the major challenges of the Spanish Presidency (reindustrialization, ecological transition, development of the social pillar and European unity), he stressed that his leadership this semester will be inspired by the deep European feeling of the majority of Spaniards. Michel, with whom Sánchez has promised to work “hand in hand”, has praised the preparation of the Spanish Presidency, during which he was convinced that “great progress” will be made and has ensured that the priorities indicated by Sánchez are in line with the interests of European citizens. “We know that the EU can count on Spain,” he concluded.
