Marlins ace announces news on social media ‘with a heavy heart’

October 6, 2023

Sandy Alcantara underwent Tommy John surgery on Friday, the Marlins star announced on his social media channels. He will miss the entire 2024 season.

“It is with a heavy heart that I would like to inform everyone that I underwent Tommy John surgery today and will miss next season,” Alcantara said in a statement. “My biggest sadness is the loss of the great Marlins fans who have been so supportive of me and the team this year. The drive to the playoffs was exciting for all of us.

“I’m doing my best for this game, I’m doing my best for this city. And that’s why I promise I won’t take a day off to get back to being better than ever. I will miss pitching, but I plan to continue to be with the team as much as possible. I’m confident that people like Jesús, Eury, Edward, Garrett and Trevor will hold the fort while I’m there giving my support. Nothing can dull my love for Miami and Marlins fans.

“I would also like Dr. “Thank you to Meister and his team for the great care they gave me today.”

The 28-year-old Alcantara, who was shut down on Sept. 23, did not pitch during the postseason push or during the National League Wild Card Series against the Phillies. Speaking to reporters Wednesday after Miami’s exit, he said no decision had been made about his future.

“I don’t know, so let’s see,” Alcantara said. “Maybe next week.” I’ll wait like you.”

Ten days after that diagnosis, Alcantara pitched flat in Milwaukee and then pitched two pain-free bullpen sessions before beginning a rehab assignment at Triple-A Jacksonville on September 21. He pitched four scoreless innings on 51 pitches (34 strikes), peaking at 98.3 mph, but shut down after feeling tightness in his forearm.

Upon returning to Miami, Alcantara said he would meet with his agent Adriel Reyes, Marlins general manager Kim Ng and manager Skip Schumaker to make a decision – one that could include surgery.

Recovery time after Tommy John surgery is typically between 12 and 14 months.

Unless the Marlins make any changes to their starting lineup in the offseason, they will enter 2024 with the following 40-man options: left-handers Jesús Luzardo, Braxton Garrett, Ryan Weathers and Trevor Rogers; right-handers Edward Cabrera, Eury Pérez and prospect Max Meyer, who had to rehab after the same procedure.

Alcantara, the 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner, wasn’t as sharp in 2023 but still posted the 15th-highest FanGraphs WAR among NL pitchers. Until his injury, he led all qualified pitchers with 858 1/3 innings pitched since 2019, including consecutive seasons of more than 200 frames from 1921-22. His 6.66 innings per start over the last three years was the highest of any qualified starter in three years since Corey Kluber averaged 6.74 IP per start from 16-18.

“I feel for Sandy,” pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr. said in the final week of the regular season in New York. “I think we all feel for Sandy. I think until the end Sandy never gave in that there was a problem and it shows me a lot about his courage, his toughness, the kind of teammate he is.” . He wants to win and be a part of it. It was a great success for us, even though it had some ups and downs. We know if Sandy takes the ball, you’re going to win seven innings.”
