What was supposed to be a festive Christmas performance ended in great tragedy in Russia. An experienced climber dressed as Santa Claus fell from the top of a 24story building and died. The detail is that most of the public present at the scene believed that the accident was part of the show.
During the performance, the man dressed as Santa Claus climbed to the top of the building. Like a climber, he descended the 24 floors and at the end greeted the children who were waiting patiently next to a Christmas tree. But instead of going down the building, he fell from there.
At first, audience members believed the fall was part of the performance, as the man fell into a snowcovered building that was one story above the ground. One person in the crowd even asked if the man had been in an accident, but the party continued as normal. Another part of the public, understanding what had happened, panicked.
The administrator of the venue where the event took place apologized after the incident, adding that the man was a “seasoned professional”: “Today has turned into a tremendous misfortune. An industrial climber disguised as Grandfather Frost [Papai Noel] fell and died. (It was a) terrible and completely unforeseeable incident. We will do everything in our power to help police understand the reasons behind this and prevent something like this from happening again.”
The cause of the fall is still under investigation, but the main theory is that the climber got confused with the safety ropes.
A woman who lives in the building said she was in shock. “My husband and my son were there. There were many witnesses, including children. At the moment no one knows why he fell. Mountaineers clean the windows of our building and there has never been a single emergency.”
A local source also reported that the dead climber's wife and son were on site and watched everything that happened.
According to reports, Russian state investigators who arrived at the scene were reviewing the circumstances of the tragedy and a possible violation of security regulations.
