The São Paulo International Film Festival reached its final stage this Wednesday with a closing ceremony that screened Luca Guadagnino’s Até os Ossos and awarded the Bandeira Paulista trophy to Aftersun.
Controversial and acclaimed during its passage through the Cannes Film Festival in May, Charlotte Wells’ feature film is an essay on the power of memory and follows a woman reminiscing about her last summer with her father.
The jury, made up of André Novais, Lina Chamie and Rodrigo Areias, also gave honorable mentions to actor Ali Junejo, for “Joyland”, directed by Saim Sadiq, to actress Zelda Samsom, for “Dalva”, directed by Emmanuelle Nicout, and the feature film “Salgueiros. Blind, sleeping woman” by Pierre Földes. The works were selected from among the works best rated by the audience within the new director’s section.
The viewers with the most votes will also receive the trophy, which this year was the feature film “Nayola” by José Miguel Ribeiro and the documentary “Marcha sobre Roma” by Mark Cousins . The chosen Brazilians were “Exu eo Universo” by Thiago Zanato and “O Mestre da Fumaça” by André Sigwalt and Augusto Soares.
The Critics’ Prize went to the national “Elis e Tom, Só Tinha de Ser com Você” by Roberto de Oliveira and the Italian “Noite Exterior” by Marco Bellocchio. Abraccine, the Brazilian Association of Film Critics, selected Sandro Kakabadze from À Margem do Ouro among the first Brazilian directors to receive its trophy.
Among the unfinished projects, Perseu Azul’s “Walala” was awarded the Paradiso prize, intended for the promotion of films still in development. Filmmaker Jorge Bodanzky received the Humanity Award.
Although the 46th edition of the São Paulo Film Festival has officially ended, from this Thursday Cinesesc will host sessions of the traditional synopsis.
A total of 24 films are available for viewing or review by the public in screenings that run through November 9th. Among them the big awardwinning “Aftersun”, which closes this year’s program.
Also included in the list are “Pacifiction”, “A Mãe ea Puta”, “All The Beauty and the Bloodshed”, “Noite Exterior”, “Racionais: Das Ruas de São Paulo pro Mundo”, “Nayola”, “Joyland” . and “Blind Willows, Sleeping Woman”. Tickets cost between R$ 24 and R$ 30.
