Sarah Polley won Best Adapted Screenplay for Women Talk

Canadian filmmaker Sarah Polley has shared a “cruel” April Fool’s joke played on her by none other than her 11-year-old daughter.

A letter emerged on Saturday morning that read: “It is with the deepest regret that we tell you this: The Oscar you have received was accidentally awarded.”

Polley won Best Adapted Screenplay for Women Talking at the 95th Academy Awards in Los Angeles last month.

The letter, posted on Twitter, urged them to “send it back” to California.

It said she could keep the award for a week so she could “enjoy her presence” in her home.

But ultimately it had to be returned so it could go to the “rightful” winner: All Quiet on the Western Front.

“We’re sorry for their loss, but it’s only fair that the play with the truly best adapted screenplay wins the Oscar.”

The filmmaker behind All Quiet on the Western Front, Edward Berger, weighed in on the joke.

“In order to save on shipping costs as I live abroad, the Academy asked me to provide you with my address so that you can ship the Oscar directly,” he tweeted to Polley.

“I’ll follow up shortly.

Polley, who rose to fame as an actress in the 1990s, quickly realized the letter wasn’t written by the academy but by her daughter as an April Fool’s joke.

But she made it clear she wasn’t impressed – saying her 11-year-old daughter was “swinging deeply” at the April Fools’ Day joke.

“We think it’s wrong that you’re receiving this on April 1st as you probably think it’s a joke and we think that’s wrong so another letter will be sent reassuring you that this isn’t a joke It’s a joke,” the letter said.

“This is far too cruel to be a joke, ergo we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience we have caused you.”
