Savannah Guthrie reveals she suffered a miscarriage after giving birth to daughter Vail

Savannah Guthrie revealed that she had a miscarriage and went through two stages of in vitro fertilization before giving birth to her second child.

The Today host, 50, and her co-host Hoda Kotb, 57, opened up about their struggles with infertility and being “older” moms as they featured on the cover of the April 2022 issue of Good Housekeeping.

Guthrie, who has a seven-year-old daughter, Vail, and a five-year-old son, Charlie, admitted that she began to doubt that she would ever have children and become a mother when she was older.

“I stopped even allowing myself to hope or believe that I could [get pregnant]because the years went by. It’s not that I think it’s impossible; I just thought it was unlikely. I didn’t mean to be reassuring,” she told the magazine.

“I was just trying to tell myself that it would be okay if it didn’t happen: ‘Maybe this isn’t meant for me and that’s okay because I’ve already received so many blessings in my life. also a child, ”she recalled.

“Looking back, that kind of thinking was probably a self-defense mechanism.”

Guthrie was four months pregnant with Vail when she married her husband Michael Feldman in 2014. After the birth of their daughter in August of that year, she suffered a miscarriage and underwent two cycles of IVF to get pregnant with her son.

The mother-of-two was 44 when she greeted Charlie in December 2016.

Kotb, who is the mother of adopted daughters Hayley, 5, and Hope, 2, has also spent years thinking she couldn’t afford parenthood. She was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 42 and came out of treatment unable to conceive.

“I remember my oncologist called and we talked about freezing my eggs. She basically said that given my age and [my breast cancer treatment]it was pretty close to a dead end,” she told Good Housekeeping.

“I was in my room and just sobbed. I thought, “Well, it is, isn’t it? Like, you almost blame yourself. Why didn’t I do it? Why didn’t I do it?” So I just pushed it away, because reality seemed unbearable, ”she recalled.

“How do you survive knowing you can’t have what you desire and what you think you really need physically?”

Later, Kotb realized that she was destined to become a mother, and sought adoption with the support of her ex-fiance Joel Schiffman, with whom she shares two daughters.

Last month, she announced on the Today show that she and Schiffman, 63, had split after eight years together, saying they were “better as friends and parents.”

“I don’t think I would have adopted me if it wasn’t for Joel. Having a stable relationship at that point was really important. Once it fell into place, it didn’t seem so scary to me,” she told Good Housekeeping.

The mother-of-two shared that she also hooked up with actress Sandra Bullock, who has two adopted children.

“I always felt a strange connection to her, although I only knew her from the series. But she was my age, and I just thought, “Wow, she’s really cool.” I called her and we talked,” Kotb explained. “She said the adoption was the most important thing she has ever done.

“When I made the decision to adopt and was on the plane to pick up my [first] daughter, I called her again. She said, “It’s about to begin!” Sometimes all you need is a model in front [you realize]I can handle it.’

Guthrie and Kotb both agreed that being an “older” mom is beneficial, stating that they are more patient and calmer than when they were younger.

“Hoda and I are at a stage in our careers where we have a lot more confidence in our schedules – that helps,” Guthrie said. “By this time in your life you have seen a few things and you know how to get through the ups and downs.

“I’m glad my kids don’t have the stressful, anxious, insecure 30-year-old version of me. The peace and tranquility that comes with age is something kids love to see in action,” she explained, although she sometimes wonders if she would be less tired if she were younger.

“We live in New York, and we have a lot of elderly parents, so you don’t stick out like a sore thumb,” she said. “But sometimes I wonder, on a Saturday afternoon when I am very tired: “Is this how young parents feel?” And yes. I know them, they are my friends – and they are exhausted.

“All parents have moments of breakdown and periods of disappointment. That is his nature.

Kotb added that having children later in life gave her a new perspective.

“All of a sudden, all of the things with young children that seem like a problem, you see it in a completely different way,” she said. “And I found myself a lot more patient and calm than I ever would have been at a younger age.”

Today’s hosts shared that it’s rewarding to work closely with another mom who understands what they go through day in and day out.

Since they both have stressful jobs, they know that finding a balance between career and motherhood can sometimes seem almost impossible.

Kotb said that interacting with her co-star makes her “feel less alone,” while Guthrie shared that they “exchange parenting tips or ideas.”

“I don’t know what balance is. Sometimes you’re out of sorts, and sometimes you’re having a good day. I don’t even think in those terms,” Guthrie explained. “My family is my priority – it’s not even close – but I have a job that I just love. And so I try to do both to the best of my ability.”

The moms also shared their key takeaways as parents, and both agreed that they should be good role models for their children.

“I want my children, especially my little girl, to have a positive body image. I’m saying all the right words, but I’m not sure if she sees it every day,” Guthrie said. “It really makes you take a hard look at yourself and there is nothing I care more about than her growing up feeling confident and strong and just loving herself.

“And so for me … I said to myself, ‘Well, you better fix it right now, you better get your head in order,’ because this little girl is watching you.”

Kotb shared that she thinks it’s important to be honest and sincere because your kids will notice if you don’t.

“Our kids feel everything we do and they feel everything. They know if you’re real and they know when you’re not real,” she explained.

“You have to really understand who you are because your kids are taking notes. Just be true and true to yourself and your children will be fine.”
