SBT chases reality around the world to compete with BBB and A Fazenda

SBT is looking for a confinement reality in the international market for launch in its 2023 schedule. To return to the format after 21 years when the last edition of aired House of Artists (2001 2004), the channel built a new studio at its headquarters in São Paulo and conducted negotiations and budgets to make the production profitable.

O Well Telinha learned that SBT Artistic and Programming Director Daniela Beyruti went to France and attended the 38th edition of Mipcom Cannes, the largest entertainment content fair in the world, which took place between 19th and 20th October 2022.

Another international trip was undertaken by Richard van Esch, also known as Richard Vaun, Silvio Santos’ faithful sidekick at SBT. From November 13th to 16th he attended MipCancun, a fair for Latin American and Hispanic products from the USA.

On both trips, the executives discussed new products, including a reality show that falls under the unscripted content category. Some novelties have been acquired, others are under negotiation.

By the time the hammer hits, the new SBT studio, dubbed 10, will have its entire structure ready, including an onsite built swimming pool, but the space is bereft of equipment such as cameras and editing tables. There is a study at the network to find out if it is more economical to rent or buy these devices when producing a reality show. Studio 10 was designed for dramaturgy and reality recordings.

According to the column, if the production of a format is artistically and financially feasible, the strategy is to launch the program during the break between Big Brother Brasil and A Fazenda in 2023.

SBT’s intention to compete for audiences with a reality show was announced by the Well Telinha in February 2022. At that time there were some formats in the test, but none of them fell in favor of the station management. Among these projects is the Argentine hotel, the Celebridades.

Though it’s still looking for a reality show for its program, the network has already signaled to the market who would be the host in charge of the task. In May, during the Mestre da Sabotagem program press conference, Otaviano Costa was surprised by an invitation from SBT to command the product.
