Scam Alert: Verizon customers are receiving mysterious texts from themselves

If you see a mysterious message on your mobile phone that looks like it came from your own phone number and has a link attached, do not click the link.

We repeat: do not click on the link.

Verizon customers this week reported receiving text messages that appear to be from themselves.

The spam messages contain a link with the following text: “Free message: Your bill for March is paid. Thanks, here’s a little present for you.”

Many people have reported the scam texts to Verizon, and The company is therefore further investigating the issue.

The company says it is aware of the news and is working with law enforcement to shut it down.

“As part of a recent fraud scheme, attackers sent text messages to some Verizon customers that appeared to be from the customer’s own number. Over the past 48 hours, our company has made significant efforts to curb current activities,” Verizon spokesman Rich Young told NJ Advance Media in a statement.

“However, SMS spam scams are a problem affecting virtually all mobile operators in recent months. We are actively working with others in our industry and with US law enforcement agencies in an investigation aimed at identifying and stopping these scammers and their illegal activities. We will continue this work on behalf of our customers. Furthermore, we have no evidence of Russian involvement,” Young added.

It’s unclear who is sending the text messages, but hackers often use this tactic to obtain sensitive information.
