Scholz calls for end to blockade of EU asylum package

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) urges that the “traffic light coalition” not stand in the way of an agreement on the planned EU asylum reform. According to information from government media, in this context, at yesterday’s cabinet meeting, he also specifically addressed the crisis decree, which the German government has not yet approved due to criticism from the Green Party. The “” and “Bild” initially reported on this.

The crisis regulation is part of the planned asylum reform, which aims, among other things, to limit irregular migration. The regulation aims to extend the period during which people can be held in prison-like conditions if there is a particularly strong increase in migration.

In Brussels, the federal government had already explained its rejection of the proposed regulation by saying that this set of rules could allow EU states to unacceptably reduce protection standards.

Once the dispute over the crisis regulation is resolved, negotiations with Parliament, which are important for reform, could likely continue. The European Parliament recently announced that it would block parts of the negotiations until EU states take a stance on the issue of crisis regulations. Today, EU interior ministers are discussing the issue in Brussels.
