School bus accident: several children injured; some were moved to Montreal

Several children were injured in a serious school bus accident this morning in Sainte-Marguerite-Marie in the Matapédia valley in Bas-St-Laurent.

A total of 11 children between the ages of 7 and 13 were in the vehicle.

One child was seriously injured but there is no fear for his life, according to the Sûreté du Québec.

The accident happened around 8 a.m. on Kemp Road in Sainte-Marguerite-Marie. The driver of the bus was reportedly unwell.

The injured were transported to Amqui Hospital.

At that point, a Code Orange was triggered by health authorities. Three children are transferred to Sainte-Justine Hospital in Montreal. An adult was also transferred to Enfant-Jésus Hospital in Quebec.

The CISSS Bas-Saint-Laurent confirms that 8 more children have been discharged from hospital.

Psychosocial support has been used in the emergency room at Amqui Hospital to support families. Seven social workers were mobilized.

The health authorities will contact those affected in the next few days.

The Causapscal Elementary School the children attend has been contacted by CISSS to offer support if needed.

A collision investigator from the Sûreté du Québec was dispatched to the scene of the accident.
