School repair program in El Salvador repeated

Álvaro O’Byrne, executive director of the National Directorate of Municipal Works (DOM), in statements to local television’s Channel 10, assured that this year this entity would intervene in the infrastructure of 480 schools, although he did not specify which agency would do so be responsible for the 440 remaining.

In September 2022, President Nayib Bukele pledged to repair 5,150 schools over the next five years after restarting the My New School program for a third time, which the president said would equate to deploying two centers a day.

The day before, during the inauguration of a Municipal Center for Welfare and Opportunity (CUBO), the president said they had already started remodeling the schools and promised, “God first,” to finish the first thousand this year.

During an act in the capital’s Mexicanos municipality, the President indicated that his government is making a solid investment for children and young people, focused on ensuring their rights to education, health, recreation and protection.

In recent annual budgets of his administration, the President has prioritized investments in the education sector, exceeding the allocation above 5.1 percent of gross domestic product in 2022, for example.
