Schrock’s Bears report card: Evaluating Justin Fields, offense, defense in loss to Chiefs – NBC Sports Chicago

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A tumultuous week for the Bears came to an end Sunday as Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the charter franchise so badly that they might want to consider closing shop.

A 41-10 loss at Arrowhead Stadium doesn’t do justice to Sunday’s loss. The Chiefs punted on their first possession but scored on the next seven to take a 41-0 lead.

Mahomes only played 2.5 quarters, long enough to ensure Travis Kelce scored a touchdown with his new girlfriend Taylor Swift in the crowd.

The Bears were pathetic on Sunday, which might be too good.

Here’s a report from the Bears for Week 3, with one group performing worse than the rest:

Offensive happen

Justin Fields said he wanted to say “F it” and play Sunday off. Maybe the Bears’ staff didn’t change the game plan, or maybe Fields is just broken, but either way, Sunday’s offense in Kansas City was an abject disaster.

In a game in which the Bears chased for more than 45 minutes, Fields completed just 11 of 22 for 99 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Fields continues to hold the ball too long, the offensive line is terrible, and the scheme does nothing to mitigate the group’s weaknesses.

Rotten stuff.

Rushing offense

The only thing the Bears did well in 2022 was dominate the football.

This team doesn’t even manage to get going consistently on site.

The Bears did some good things in the run game to start Sunday’s contest, but they couldn’t sustain it and had to mostly abandon the run after halftime.

Fields ran 11 times for 47 yards, while Roschon Johnson and Khalil Herbert ran 15 times for 69 yards.

Did I mention the offensive line stinks?

Pass defense

I don’t want to be too harsh on a unit that has already beaten Eddie Jackson and Kyler Gordon before losing Jaylon Johnson and Tyrique Stevenson in the first half.

As expected, Mahomes shined in the Bears’ patchwork secondary.

With no pass rush to speak of, the Bears had little chance of stopping Mahomes from tearing them apart without breaking a sweat.

Run defense

The Bears’ front four is an abomination. Other than Andrew Billings, none of them were able to do anything substantial in the three games.

Linebackers Tremaine Edmunds and TJ Edwards did a good job cleaning up the mess. That’s all you ask of two elite linebackers who don’t have a constant block-gobbling force in front of them.

Isiah Pacheco and Clyde Edwards-Helaire found little resistance from the Bears’ front, combining for 117 yards and two touchdowns.

Womp womp.

COACHING

Can I give less than an F? We’ll think of something.

Look, the Beas are supposed to lose to the Chiefs. One team is the defending champion, the other is working as the league’s doormat to defend their title.

But the fact that this Bears team — one that spent money and major draft capital on talented players in the offseason — looks worse than last year’s unit is a complete indictment of the entire coaching staff.

There were no answers and no adjustments. Players are unable to succeed on both sides of the football.

A lot of this starts with a questionable roster setup, but when it comes to game operations, the Bears’ staff completely screwed themselves up on Sunday and through the first three weeks.
