The Seahawks ensured Geno Smith would continue writing his new career story in Seattle in 2023 and beyond.
Smith and the Seahawks have agreed to a new three-year deal worth $105 million, NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Monday.
The deal comes just ahead of Tuesday’s deadline for teams to use a franchise tag for a player and avoids lengthy contract negotiations that could potentially have stretched into the summer.
Smith made a remarkable turnaround in his career, leading the Seahawks to a postseason berth on his way to NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2022.
The former New York Jets second-round pick in 2013 has spent the past seven seasons as a backup, including the last three in Seattle behind Russell Wilson. As 2022 began, most expected Smith to be a stopgap for the Seahawks.
Instead, he shone from the jump.
Smith completed a league-high 69.8 percent of his passes for 4,282 yards, 30 TDs and 11 INTs en route to a Pro Bowl bid. The exhilarating signal caller displayed an ability to command offense and make splash plays, and displayed a brilliant relationship with receivers DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.
Throughout the offseason, the Seahawks leadership has said they wanted to keep Smith in Seattle. Seattle did that on Monday.
