The Boston Red Sox have a new chief baseball officer and early reviews are positive.
It was announced on Wednesday that Craig Breslow will take over as the Red Sox’ new chief baseball officer after a successful stint as assistant general manager with the Chicago Cubs.
It will be Breslow’s second tour of duty in Boston, as the 43-year-old spent five seasons as a reliever with the Red Sox in two different stints. In that second stint, Breslow became the 2013 World Series champion and developed friendships that would help him later.
“Craig was an outstanding candidate,” Red Sox President and CEO Sam Kennedy said in a press release. “The praise from other baseball executives was impressive, but what really set him apart were the clear character references from former teammates, including David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, David Ross, Brock Holt and Kevin Youkilis.” Craig knows what it takes to get in Boston wants to be successful and he’s ready for the challenge.”
Ortiz and Pedroia were also members of the 2013 World Series team, as was Ross, who worked with Breslow as the Cubs’ manager. Holt played for Breslow in subsequent seasons, while Youkilis was on the roster during the New Haven, Connecticut native’s first stint in Boston in 2006.
“I couldn’t be more excited to return to the Boston Red Sox, an organization that means so much to my family and me,” Breslow said in a press release. “I am honored to have the opportunity to lead baseball operations and work with so many talented people.
“I would like to thank John Henry, Tom Werner, Mike Gordon and Sam Kennedy for entrusting me with executing our shared vision for this organization. I know firsthand how special it is to win in Boston and I look forward to experiencing that passion and success with our fans again.”
Breslow will bring experience in pitcher development, where he made a name for himself with the Cubs. The Red Sox will officially introduce Breslow on November 2nd.
