The Padres and Athletics have agreed a four-player deal that will send veteran left-handed starter Sean Manaea to San Diego. the teams announced on Sunday. The Padres will also host minor-league right-hander Aaron Holiday, while Oakland meet right-hander Adrian Martinez and youthful infielder Euribil Angeles.
Manaea, 30 years old, has completed the first 30+ start season of his career. He had a 3.91 ERA (104 ERA+) and a 4.73 strikeout-to-walk ratio. His contributions were worth an estimated 3.2 wins over backup, according to Baseball-Reference calculations. Manaea will earn $9.75 million this season after agreeing to a deal with the Athletics that spared either party arbitration.
Manaea is a low-slot left-hander who has been playing his sinker and changeup almost 85 percent of the time this past season. He creates more than two yards of extension on his courts, which allows his low 90s fastball to be played faster than he registers on the radar gun. His move, meanwhile, is his best swing-and-miss offer as he dodged bats in 31 percent of the hacks made against him in 2021.

Manaea, a forthcoming free agent who was limited to just 16 starts from 2019-20 due to injury, is expected to join a San Diego rotation that includes Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, Joe Musgrove and Mike Clevinger, who returns from surgery at Tommy John returns and may miss the beginning of the year due to knee pain. He is the youngest in a line of track and field athletes to be traded this winter, joining first baseman Matt Olson (Braves), third baseman Matt Chapman (Blue Jays) and starting mate Chris Bassitt (Mets).
SportsLine forecasts that Manaea improves the Padres’ chances of reaching the postseason by 8.9 percentage points. This is an increase from 55.3 percent to 64.2 percent.
Incidentally, Manaea will make his spring training debut with the Padres on Sunday against – who else? — Athletics, according to The Athletic’s Dennis Lin.
Holiday, May 22, was Oakland’s 13th-round pick in last summer’s draft over Old Dominion University. He is a pure helper as he has only started two competitions dating back to the beginning of his college career. A scout told CBS Sports that Holiday was thrown past 100 mph during the offseason.
As for Oakland’s return, the 25-year-old Martinez was set to make his major league debut this season. Last season, he split between double- and triple-A’s, posting a 3.38 ERA and a 2.98 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 125 innings. He has a quality move but is expected to serve with relief due to his lackluster command and breaking ball. However, the A’s could use him in their newly created rotation if they so wished.
Angeles, May 20, batted .330/.392/.445 in nearly 500 plate appearances last season between single- and high-A. These grades are all the more impressive that he was two years younger than the average competition. Angeles played at least 20 games each at shortstop, second and third base, although reviewers believe his future will likely be a bat-first utility type.
