New ideas and a fresh perspective are important to this coaching staff, but when it came to hiring an offensive coordinator, the most important thing was a familiar face.
“Most of all, I wanted Josh to feel comfortable,” McDermott said.
“Part of our plan when we started was continuity for Josh, from the coaching staff, the organization, the games, the defense,” said Bills general manager Brandon Bean. “Even though we have a new O-line coach, we don’t need to change all the defenses. He comes to learn our system. The more we can keep the same for Josh, the easier it will be to assimilate.
“Ken will have his own nuances. Everyone does it, about how he does things. But a lot will come. It’s just that in the end we felt that was the most important thing.”
McDermott and Bean wanted to make sure Allen had a say in the decision, and they believe Dorsey played a big part in the development of many quarterbacks, including Allen.
“When you look at Ken’s influence on Cam Newton, and then you look at what Ken has been able to do with Josh, with Brian (Daybol) and helping Josh,” McDermott said. “Then Josh puts his stamp on Ken, I think that alone says a lot or says enough. Ken is a good young coach who works in this, he is smart and as I mentioned earlier, these are two good qualities that give you a chance to be successful. “
