The Rams failed to trade running back Cam Akers. Now they’re trying to figure out how to coexist with him, at least until the window to trade him opens again in March.
Unsurprisingly, trainer Sean McVay fought his way through the subject with a glass half full on Wednesday. Ultimately, however, McVay did not rule out Akers’ release.
“That’s one possibility, but like I said, I think the first option is to weigh some of the different things that we’ve put on the table in terms of what it might look like. Let’s address how we got here and where my responsibilities fall within the scope of this type of thing and see what’s next,” McVay told reporters.
McVay claimed Akers made it clear he wants to be part of the team moving forward. However, Akers did not train on Wednesday as Akers missed training due to personal reasons.
The simple reality is that the Rams are stuck. Akers wanted out, and he probably still wants out. A league source scoffed at reports that the Rams had “declined” several trade offers for Akers. As the source explained, it was the other way around, with the Rams making desperate proposals to other teams that were consistently denied.
Now the Rams must hope they can rebuild the bridge with a player who was led to believe the bridge would be wiped out. They may have no choice but to release him – unless they are willing to pay him not to play for the rest of the season before trying to release him to a new team again in March.
Akers last played on October 9 in a 10-22 loss to the Cowboys.
