Portuguese justice, through a press release from the prosecutor’s office on Friday, said it had carried out searches in Porto as part of an investigation launched last month into the naturalization procedure for Roman Abramovich. Turned Portuguese in April 2021, the Russian oligarch, who is currently in an unnamed Chelsea sale turmoil, is considered guilty of influence peddling, corruption, document falsification, money laundering and tax evasion to further his goals.
Indeed, Abramovich (aged 55) took advantage of a Portuguese law called reparations allowing the naturalization of the descendants of Sephardic Jews persecuted and expelled at the end of the 15th century. In these circumstances, Chief Rabbi of Porto Daniel Litvak was, among other things, arrested and placed under judicial supervision. He and several other high-ranking Jewish officials are suspected of fabricating and issuing false certificates of Jewish ancestry to numerous candidates, including Abramovich, in exchange for bribes. A total of 56,000 Sephardi Jews have become Portuguese since the law was passed in 2015.
