Season over for Wild captain

The Minnesota Wild just suffered a major blow as the club announced Thursday that captain Jared Spurgeon will be out for the remainder of the season.

In a press release, the St. Paul-based team announced that the 34-year-old defenseman will go under the knife twice in the next few weeks to treat an injury to his left hip and another to his back. He should be fully healed in preparation for training camp in September.

John Hynes' men are 18-20-5 this season and are eight points behind the Nashville Predators, the last team in the Western Conference.

This year, Spurgeon has five assists in 16 games.
