The union leaders of the common front (FTQ, CSN, CSQ, APTS) met on Wednesday morning at the Quebec Convention Center. The day before, all trade union federations had brought their committees together to examine the possibility of an indefinite general strike after the holidays, after seven days of strikes that ended last week.
The 1,500 delegates supported the idea of an unlimited general strike in early 2024, announced François Enault, 1st Vice President of the CSN.
Mr. Enault condemned yo-yo negotiations. “Significant deposits are required to settle,” he said.
His colleague, the president of the CSQ Éric Gingras, explained that the government's proposal from the previous day did not meet the requirements. The FSE-CSQ, which reports to the headquarters, had already rejected this new government offer the day before.
“We will not accept employment conditions that do not improve our networks,” concluded FTQ President Magali Picard.
“It is possible to get there this week,” she added.
The common front calls for an acceleration of negotiations, both at the sectoral tables and at the central table. Despite significant differences, with the appropriate mandates, everything can still be resolved in “24-48 hours,” assure the union leaders.
