While Brazilians were still preparing for New Year's celebrations, 2024 arrived early in some parts of the world. Because of the International Date Line, a standard that determines the alternation of days, countries in Asia and the Pacific were the first to celebrate it. But gradually the fires spread across the skies of Europe and Africa until they reached South America.
Cities in Australia, Japan, Indonesia and other countries initially said goodbye to 2023, with different traditions and celebrations with lights and fireworks.

Australia
In Australia, people welcomed 2024 with fireworks shows, including the famous display taking place at the Sydney Opera House and on the Harbor Bridge.
New Zealand
New Zealand also celebrated the New Year with fireworks. The exhibition was held at the top of the Sky Tower in Auckland.
Japan
In Japan, people gathered in southern Tokyo for a countdown event to the start of 2024. At the Zojoji Buddhist Temple, people rang a huge bell to celebrate the New Year.
Indonesia
To celebrate the New Year in Indonesia, people gathered to watch light shows and fireworks.
South Korea
In South Korea, people took to the streets. The annual bell ringing ceremony to celebrate the beginning of 2024 was held at the Bosingak Pavilion in Seoul.
