Anyway, if you haven’t been listening, the TL;DL is that it’s a joyful banger celebrating an impending breakup: “I know he’s gonna be a mess / When I break the news / But I will.” be single soon.”
The song was actually written “a while ago” but was released on Friday as Selena finishes work on her third album. Of course, people started speculating about who the single’s subject might be — which led some people to The Weeknd, who Selena was dating in 2017.
The basis of this theory is that in the music video, Selena leaves a Sex and the City-style breakup note while singing, “The weekend is almost here.”
Well, it seems Selena isn’t a huge fan of this theory herself — as she responded to a post about the speculation by saying, “Couldn’t be more wrong.”
This isn’t the only Weeknd-related IG interaction Selena has had recently: Last week, she responded with her singing to an AI version of the 2016 Weeknd hit “Starboy” by simply writing “Scary.”
As for the ending of The Weeknd, there’s a whole theory that “The Idol” was essentially crazy Selena fan fiction… so that’s it!
