Senators lose first-round pick

The Ottawa Senators will have to give up a first-round pick in 2022 due to their involvement in the aborted Evgenii Dadonov trade.

The National Hockey League announced in a press release Wednesday that the Senators will be stripped of the vote in 2024, 2025 or 2026.

Ottawa will have to decide which year it wants to lose its election after the lottery, which will be held in May.

In July 2021, the Senators traded Evgenii Dadonov to the Vegas Golden Knights for Nick Holden and a third-round draft pick. However, they had failed to adequately communicate to Vegas the no-trade clause in the Russian striker’s contract.

In March 2022, the Golden Knights traded Dadonov to the Ducks, only to discover that Anaheim was on Dadonov’s blacklist. The transaction was therefore aborted.
