Patrick Roy was the head coach of choice for one of the groups trying to get their hands on the Ottawa Senators in recent months.
Sportsnet hockey expert Elliotte Friedman announced this on Monday.

“I don’t know what Steve Staios thinks [le président des opérations hockey] and Michael Andlauer [le propriétaire] by Patrick Roy, but one of the investor groups was preparing to appoint Patrick Roy as head coach. “This is the decision they would have made if they had control of the team,” Friedman said during his “32 Thoughts” podcast.
He made the statement on the sidelines of the significant change that took place at the Sens last week when general manager Pierre Dorion resigned.
Recall that it was Andlauer’s group that won the auction for the National Hockey League (NHL) team. Last September, the $950 million sale was approved by the Bettman round.
Four groups of investors were initially in the running to buy “Sens”. Friedman did not reveal the identities of those who allegedly had a fondness for the former Quebec Remparts pilot.
Roy led the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team from 2005 to 2013 and from 2018 to 2023. In between his two stints at the helm of the team, he was head coach of the Colorado Avalanche. He had a record of 130-92-24 in three seasons behind the Avs bench.
The former NHL star goaltender has never hidden his desire to get another chance in the best hockey league in the world.
Right now, the Senators appear to have no intention of showing head coach DJ Smith the exit. The latter has been working in this position since 2019-2020 and has a contract valid until the end of the 2024-2025 season.
