North Korea has sent soldiers and equipment along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), apparently with the aim of restoring guard posts destroyed following the 2018 inter-Korean military agreement. According to the Yonhap Agency, the South Korean military recorded an increase in activity across the border areas after the North promised last Thursday to resume all military measures frozen in 2018 in response to Seoul’s partial suspension of the agreement after the launch a military spy satellite through the north.
Five years ago, to ease tensions and prevent accidental clashes, the two Koreas each blew up 10 of 11 guard posts in the DMZ, leaving only one operational on each side, for historical or other reasons. “Currently, only a few guard posts are being renovated, but (North Korea) should restore them all as they are important surveillance facilities,” a senior military officer told reporters, quoted by Yonhap.
In response to the North’s latest move, Seoul officials vowed to closely monitor activity above the 38th parallel for signs of provocation along the border.
