Serbia closes ranks with Russia The Press

In fact, President Aleksandar Vučić cannot afford to move away from the EU. But he needs Moscow to suppress pro-democracy protests.

In front of the Belgrade City Hall plateau, special police units beat demonstrators protesting against electoral manipulation. On the balcony of the presidential palace opposite, a man watched the bloody events. Yes, he followed the demonstration “at his place of work” and “was not afraid of the violent perpetrators”, the all-powerful president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, proudly confessed on Instagram at the beginning of the week. For three hours, his political opponents tried to “destroy” the people’s will to vote: “But I will not allow them to destroy Serbia”.

As in previous days, thousands of people marched in the center of Belgrade on Sunday to demonstrate against the blatant manipulation of the December 17th parliamentary and municipal elections by “imported” voters with fictitious addresses. Attempts by opposition politicians to address the crowd from the City Hall balcony failed because the gates were locked. Masked people then broke several city hall windows with flagpoles – triggering a police operation of notorious severity. Eight police officers and 38 civilians were injured, police chief Ivica Ivkovic said on Monday.
