Serbia expects constructive results of dialogue with Kosovar side

BELGRADE, August 9 (Prensa Latina) Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said today her government hopes meetings with Kosovar leaders next week in Brussels will be constructive.

According to Brnabic, the main priorities of Serbia are maintaining peace and stability in the region, as well as investing additional efforts aimed at developing regional relations in all areas.

The Prime Minister of the Balkan country added that the parties could have great potential for cooperation in the energy sector through the Open Balkans initiative, which she believes has proven to be an efficient framework for solving problems.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovar Prime Minister Albin Kurti accepted an invitation from European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Josep Borrell to a meeting on August 18.

Tensions between Belgrade and Pristina intensified after Kosovan police closed the checkpoint on the administrative line with Serbia to invalidate documents from that country.

Mostly Albanian-populated Kosovo unilaterally declared independence in 2008 and has been recognized by the United States, Canada and most EU member countries, but not by Serbia, Russia, China, Spain, Greece, Iran and other nations.

Serbia, which is seeking rapprochement with the European Union (EU), began negotiations to normalize relations with Kosovo in 2011, mediated by Brussels.
