Of this month’s releases and comebacks (which you can check out on our calendar), we recommend trying these picks.

The White House plumbers

Justin Theroux and Woody Harrelson in The Plumbers of the White House.

The five chapters of this miniseries look at the Watergate case from the perspective of political satire. Humor, drama and a political thriller intertwine to tell the story behind the scandal that ended Nixon’s presidency. In this case, the plot focuses on the characters of E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy, former CIA and FBI agents respectively, who to their surprise end up on the Presidential Re-election Committee, where they plan various covert operations, including the bugging of the Watergate complex. Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux bring the protagonists to life in a story that has already been told on television (the most recent one by Gaslit covered similar themes with a similar tone but with a different angle), but one that is worth repeating to be experienced for the incredible development and its picturesque characters well portrayed by the protagonists.

Where and when to see? Coming May 2 to HBO Max.

Sherwood

David Morrissey, Leslie Manville and Robert Glenister in the second episode of Sherwood.David Morrissey, Leslie Manville and Robert Glenister, in the second episode of “Sherwood”. Matt Squire

The Guardian’s criticism of this British drama defined it as a ‘no but’ production. “The smartest, most compelling series I’ve seen in years,” read the headline, praising the script, the acting and the overall handling of a very complex subject. Set in a mining town in Nottinghamshire, the action tells the true story of two murders that led to one of the biggest man-hunts in British history. One of the dead is a former trade unionist who took a special interest in the covert activities of the former local police, leading authorities to suspect there may be a link between his death and the miners’ strike. David Morrissey and Leslie Manville are the main actors.

Where and when to see? Its six episodes will be available on Filmin on the 2nd.

Queen Charlotte: A History of the Bridgertons

India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest star in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

The Bridgertons’ universe expands from one of his most picturesque characters, that of Queen Charlotte, a woman with impossible hairstyles who enjoys being a matchmaker among young people of high society. His arrival at court for an arranged marriage to King George III. was a complete revolution (the fictional Queen Charlotte is black; there are theories about the real one claiming she had African ancestry) and the start of what has been dubbed “the great experiment” by the black families who share social circles with the rest of the nobility, be granted titles of nobility. Also in the timeline set in the present of the mother series, the queen desperately longs for her numerous offspring to settle down and have offspring. The series has everything we’ve come to expect from a tale from The Bridgertons and Shonda Rhimes, with a good dose of romance, fun and engaging plots, to which a more serious backdrop is added when it comes to court racism and classism.

Where and when to see? Netflix will premiere all six episodes on May 4th.

Unit: Kabul

Marian Alvarez and Fariba Sheikhan in The Kabul unit.

The third season of the series created by Dani de la Torre and Alberto Marini breaks with the usual storylines of La unidad. Now there is no terrorist risk on Spanish territory and it doesn’t matter so much where the characters come from and what their personal situation is. Survival is all that matters now. The Taliban takeover of Kabul in 2021 caught them in the Afghan city. There everyone will experience absolute chaos in perspective and be one more, together with thousands of Afghans trying to escape from a country that suddenly returns to the Middle Ages. The frenetic and very well-executed plot, a hallmark of the house, combines some stories and a direction that conveys to the viewer the agony of these moments with overwhelming scenes. A heart-warming season without ceasing to be one of the most entertaining and well-closed Spanish series of today.

Where and when to see? Its six episodes will premiere on May 18 on Movistar Plus+.

The silence

Arón Piper, protagonist of the series “El silencio”.

Aitor Gabilondo (Patria, Entrevías, Vivir sin permiso) is the creator of this psychological thriller starring Arón Piper. The Elite Quarry actor (also starring Manu Ríos, of the same origin) plays a young man who is released after six years after being accused of murdering his parents when he was a minor. He has not said a word during his time in prison and it is a mystery as to why he committed this crime or what plans he has for his new life. A psychiatrist must determine if he poses a danger to society by secretly observing him, for which he needs the help of a young woman from the boy’s past, with whom he seems to have a special connection. Gabilondo knows how to find the key that connects to the spectators, it will be necessary to see if he has achieved it again.

Where and when to see? It launches on Netflix on Friday the 19th.

Platonic

Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, in the series Platonic.

Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen star (and executive produce) in a comedy updated as When Harry Met Sally, part of a similar question: Can a man and a woman just be friends? The protagonists were best friends in the past, but when he married a woman she didn’t get along with, the relationship cooled off completely. They get back together now that he’s divorced, but their lives have changed and while he seems trapped in endless adolescence, she’s matured, married and has three children. In addition, there was a sexual tension between the two in the past, which still strains the relationship. It won’t revolutionize TV comedy, but it can be good entertainment for lovers of romantic comedy.

Where and when to see? It will premiere on Apple TV+ on the 24th.

American Chinese: The Series

Jimmy Liu and Michelle Yeoh in Chinese American: The Series.
