An underage girl is now fighting for her life after being hit head-on by a vehicle while crossing the street in Matane on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident happened around 4:15 p.m. on Saint-Jérôme Avenue between Promenade des Capits and Otis Street. According to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), the victim, who was over 10 years old, crossed the street at an unintended place.
“The underage girl was transported to the hospital center where we fear for her life,” SQ spokeswoman Catherine Bernard said.
The driver of the vehicle, in her 60s, escaped unharmed but was still taken to hospital for treatment for nerve shock.
An accident scene reconstruction specialist went to the crime scene to analyze the scene and understand the circumstances of the event.
Apart from the inappropriate location of the crossing, the authorities do not advance any particular hypothesis as to the reasons that led to the impact.
The section of road involved in the collision was closed to traffic to allow investigators to do their job.
