Several countries are interested in joining the Brics group

As Maqetuka told the Sputnik news agency this Sunday, six of them have officially expressed their desire to become part of the bloc.

The diplomat added that among the applicants are two African nations, Algeria and Egypt, while Iran, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates have also indicated their desire to join the group.

Maqetuka also emphasized that all Brics members welcome potential new members, reminding that South Africa joined in 2010 and the group has not expanded since then.

The idea of admitting new members was raised by China last May, and after that several countries, including Argentina, have shown their willingness to join the federation.

The Brics Group is an informal intergovernmental economic and trade association of five rapidly developing countries aimed at developing dialogue and multilateral cooperation.
