Several forest fires broke out in northern Italy

The fire brigade is fighting several forest fires in northern Italy. A fire that broke out in Lake Maggiore on Friday night was under control by Easter Sunday.

On the other hand, other fires in the Lombardy region, for example in the provinces of Brescia, Lecco on Lake Como or Sondrio, were favored and fanned repeatedly by dry soil and plants, as well as by the wind, as the firefighters announced. Several hectares were victims of the flames.

There were also fires in Liguria and Piedmont, also in the northwest of the country, near the cities of Imperia and Savona. The forces were supported by helicopters and special firefighting aircraft, the so-called Canadair aircraft. Dozens of people had to be rescued from the fires.

Because of the sometimes severe drought, there is a high risk of wildfires in the areas. On the other side of the Swiss border, there have recently been forest fires, for example in the canton of Ticino.
