At least four people mowed down by U-Haul in Bay Ridge: ’emotionally disturbed’ Asian man in 60’s in custody after hitting police officer and pedestrian with rented truck

At least four people, including a police officer, are injured after being mowed down by a U-Haul truck on a Bay Ridge sidewalk.
The driver, described by police sources to as an Asian man in his 60s, is in custody.
His motive remains unclear, but he is described as “emotionally disturbed”.
At 11 a.m. he struck several people on 5th Avenue and the Bay Ridge Parkway before driving north.

He was eventually stopped at Red Hook.
Harrowing surveillance footage from some of the businesses that line his route shows him mowing into a cyclist.
The incident coincides with the first day of the death penalty trial of Sayfullo Saipov, who killed eight people in a rented Home Depot truck on the West Side Highway in 2017.
Police have yet to confirm a link between Saipov’s case and today’s incident.
A police officer was injured in Bay Ridge today, but the extent of their injuries is unknown.
It is unclear how badly the victims are injured. The NYPD is yet to confirm many details, but the driver of the U-Haul is believed to be in custody
