Punk fans can snap up the London house where Johnny Rotten lived at the height of his fame – if they’re prepared to part with £1.55million.

The stylish three-bedroom duplex no longer looks like a rock star’s home after a major renovation, but in the late 1970s it was the “best club in London”.

John Lydon – aka Rotten, the lead singer of the Sex Pistols – moved into Gunter Grove’s house in Chelsea in 1978, immediately after the band’s demise.

Lydon was considered a figurehead of the punk movement with hits such as “Anarchy in the UK” and “God Save the Queen”.

The 67-year-old later formed a new band, Public Image Ltd, and Gunter Grove in Chelsea became their base for three years.

Former Clash guitarist Keith Levene described the apartment as “the best club in London”, and he and drummer Jim Walker eventually moved in too, and many other punk and dub lovers often joined them to hang out into the night to celebrate and argue.

In an interview in 2018, Lydon described it as “a life on the verge of complete collapse.”

Now the property has been renovated and modernized with muted colors on the walls, a chandelier in the living room and elegant bathrooms.

The only clue to its rocky past is an unofficial blue plaque marking Rotten’s time there.

The 1,369 sqm property is spread over three floors and includes a kitchen, dining room and reception room on the first floor, a master bedroom with en-suite bathroom, a second bedroom and family bathroom on the second floor, and a third bedroom and the private roof terrace on the second Third floor.

Agne Karuzaite of Strutt & Parker said: “45 Gunter Grove is an exceptional maisonette despite its rock star past.”

“The current owner has created a fantastic space that expresses the eccentricities of its previous resident, Johnny Rotten.

“The buyer also has the option to purchase the apartment fully furnished, providing the opportunity to purchase not only a piece of London history, but also a well-appointed home in a sought-after Chelsea location.”
