Shadow war heats up as top Iranian military adviser killed in suspected Israeli airstrike in Syria – Fox News

An adviser to Iran’s main military branch in Syria was killed in a suspected Israeli airstrike in Damascus, Syria, on Thursday night as fighting between Tehran-backed forces and the US and Israel escalated in recent weeks.

The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRCG) threatened to avenge the adviser identified as Milad Heydari, and according to Israeli reports it said: “The false and criminal Zionist regime will undoubtedly receive an answer to this crime.”

According to The Times of Israel, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the attacks targeted an arms depot and Iran-backed groups south of the capital.

PENTAGON SAYS 6 US TROOPS WERE TREATED FOR TLAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES IN SYRIA AFTER IRAN-BACKED ATTACKS

The attacks were the second attack on Damascus said to have been launched from Jerusalem in 24 hours after it reportedly hit the capital on Wednesday night in an attack that wounded at least two Syrian soldiers, according to Israeli reports.

Deadly attacks in Syria appear to have increased in recent weeks as the US and Israel — which support opposition forces in eastern Syria — respond to attacks by IRGC-backed forces.

Since the deadly civil war broke out in 2011, Iran has supplied arms and support to the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

The Pentagon confirmed that its air defense system was down in at least one of the attacks on a coalition military base in northeast Syria last week.

General Erik Kurilla testified in a hearing at the Hill last week that Iran-backed forces have been behind 78 attacks on US bases in Iraq and Syria since January 2021.
