Many fans of the song thought it was cheating, but Shaggy – who has been married to wife Rebecca Packer for almost ten years and has three daughters with her – has now cleared the matter up.

The rapper was asked by People if a lot of people think of him as a “gamer” because of the song.

He told the publication, “There was a big misunderstanding with that song because it’s not a cheat song.” It’s an anti-cheating song. It’s just that nobody actually listened to the record until the end.

“There’s a part on the record where it’s a conversation between two people and one of them, that’s me at this point, giving you bad advice like, ‘Hey bro, how did you get caught ?’ Just tell her, “It wasn’t me,” and the guy ends up saying, “I’m going to tell her I’m sorry for the pain I caused.”

“I’ve listened to your reasoning, it doesn’t make any sense at all. I’ll tell her I’m sorry for the pain I caused. “You may think you’re a player, but you’re totally lost.”

Shaggy concluded, ‘Nobody hears that part!’ That’s what the song says.’

This comes after reggae singer Shaggy revealed Prince Harry is a fan of his music – and sang him a rendition of his hit ‘It Wasn’t Me’ when they first met.

The Duke of Sussex met the star in the hitmaker’s home country of Jamaica when he visited the island in 2012 – and wowed the musician with a version of his raunchy single.

“When Prince Harry came to Jamaica, he visited the Bustamante Hospital for Children,” Shaggy told Observer Magazine. “My daughter thought he was supposed to be a prince on horseback, like in her storybook.

“He turned to me and said, ‘Wow, she’s just not impressed,’ and then he sang, ‘It Wasn’t Me.’ ‘So Prince Harry is a Shaggy fan!’

Shaggy went on to say that he also likes to think that Harry’s late grandmother – Queen Elizabeth – was an avid listener of his music – having played at her 92nd birthday party at the Royal Albert Hall.

“I was right next to her after that,” he added. “It would have been crazy if she said, ‘Hello Mr. Boombastic.'”

Shaggy’s most successful song, It Wasn’t Me, tells the story of a man’s dilemma after being caught cheating on his girlfriend. Despite being a controversial hit at the time, it became the UK’s best-selling single of 2001.

The star, who has two sons from a previous relationship and three daughters with wife Rebecca, is famous for his sexually charged lyrics, with many of his songs expressing his appreciation for beautiful women.

Shaggy also revealed that while he’s not a “big weed smoker,” he believes the world would be a much calmer place if “every single world leader” smoked weed.

The music legend previously opened up about his three decades in the industry on The Project – before revealing how he got his unusual stage name all those years ago.

He openly admitted, “I was given the name Shaggy in high school.” My hair was all over the place and that’s why they called me Shaggy, like a Shaggy dog. I did not like it.’

He continued, “Then I went to England.” I was in a cab and the guy driving the cab said, “Oh my god – I can’t believe they’re playing a song by a guy named Shaggy!”

“I was like, ‘What’s wrong with Shaggy?'” Then he explained what ‘s**g’ meant.’

In England, the term “s**g” is colloquially used to describe sexual relationships. I thought it was the coolest name after that!’
