Shakira faces a new tax investigation in Spain after officials opened an investigation into a second case of alleged tax fraud by the singer.

With a trial date set for an ongoing tax fraud case over alleged tax failures between 2012 and 2014, the 46-year-old “Hips Don’t Lie” hitmaker is facing another setback after officials confirmed on Thursday that an investigation into two people would be opened Possible cases of tax fraud from 2018.

The inquiry is being conducted by a judge at a court in Spain’s Esplugues de Llobregat region, near Barcelona. This is the same court that opened their first investigation, which is now before the court.

The ‘Whenever, Wherever’ singer – who moved to Miami with her two sons earlier this year – is due to return to Barcelona in November to face court.

Her dramatic move across the pond comes after she split from her former partner and soccer star Gerard Piqué.

“Instructional Court No. 2 in Esplugues de Llobregat has opened a case after prosecutors filed a complaint against singer Shakira over two alleged tax crimes related to her 2018 tax returns,” a spokesman for Catalonia’s Supreme Court said in a statement.

The Colombian pop star is in the middle of a legal battle for allegedly failing to pay $14.7 million in taxes while she was living in Spain between 2012 and 2014 – a period when she was reportedly not living in the country.

Shakira – real name Shakira Mebarak – said she was going through the “darkest hour” of her life as the Spanish government faces up to eight years in prison if she is found guilty of taxing the country millions of dollars.

Prosecutors insist Shakira was indeed living in the countryside at the time, saying she bought a house in Barcelona in May 2012. They said she lived there with Piqué and their firstborn son, who was born in Spain in 2013.

At the time, Shakira’s official residence was in the Bahamas, but prosecutors say she spent most of her time in Spain.

If Shakira is found guilty at the November trial, she could face a $23.5 million fine in addition to jail time.

She previously said that “Spanish tax authorities often do this” to celebrities and “unfairly to the ordinary taxpayer”.

The singer, who has sold more than 80 million records worldwide, has repeatedly maintained her innocence, saying she previously paid off a $17.5 million debt to Spain’s tax authorities and owed them nothing else.
