Sharp criticism from actor Richard Dreyfuss of the Hollywood Academy’s new diversity standards for the Oscars

The actor criticized that these new requirements for the selection of films in competition take minorities into account

The name of Richard Dreyfuss is well known in the film industry, having spawned such productions as Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and What Happened to Bob during his career. He was nominated for an Academy Award and is considered one of the most commercial faces on the big screen. According to some statements in an interview with PBS, he is in the eye of the hurricane.

The actor had a conversation with the show “Firing Line With Margaret Hoover” in which he spoke about various topics in the film industry and it was a certain piece of information that caused controversy when the journalist told him that films starting in 2024 will be new Standards will have to compete for the Academy Awards.

The actor also pointed out that, in his opinion, there is no minority or majority in the country for this “I need to draw attention to this”: “I’m sorry, but I don’t think we have to protect a minority in the country like this”.

To illustrate his reasoning, Dreyfuss used your work Laurence Olivier as the protagonist of the 1951 film Othello. According to the actor, this production would be the perfect target to accuse him of blackface, since the Englishman was the last white person to play the character in Shakespeare’s work.

“Oliver was the last white actor to play Othello and he did a great job playing a black guy… Are you telling me I can never play a black guy? Or if you’re not Jewish, you can’t do The Merchant of Venice, we’re crazy,” he concluded in the interview.

It should be noted that the new standards to which the actor invoked were first discussed in 2020 and will be institutionalized for deliveries from 2024 onwards.

The Hollywood Academy has determined that productions aiming for Best Picture must meet at least two out of four standards: Representation on screen, in a creative team, ways of accessing the audiovisual industry and/or audience promotion.

For the section of screen rendering and narration, The tape must contain one of the following three criteria:

1. That one of its protagonists belongs to an ethnic minority

2. That 30% of supporting actors come from underrepresented groups

3. That the argument focuses on the history of one of these groups.

For the section of creative teamThe three criteria that one must meet are:

1. At least two of the creative leadership positions must be from underrepresented groups

2. That they are part of six lower positions

3. That at least 30% of the team comes from these groups

Regarding racial minority, the Academy states the following: Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Black/African American, Native American, Middle Eastern American, Hawaiian/Pacific Native, and “other underrepresented ethnicities or races.”

Underrepresented groups on the screen are: Women, ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ community or people with different abilities.
